and back to Wyoming again…

We left Idaho Falls and went back to Wyoming!  and we are so glad that we did!  I keep thinking of a quote from Dr. Seuss :

“It’s opener there
in the wide open air.
OH!THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! …

You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights!”

—-

and we are seeing the sights–believe me!

But first, let me say thanks to our friends in Idaho Falls– Jim, Susan and David, Jody and Megan–how sweet you are to open your homes to  these travelers! And John wants me to mention–what are the odds of us visiting two families who each have a very old dog (15 yrs) and 2 cats and a turtle???

When I told Jody about our blog she said, “oh yeah—’All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost’… it’s from the Hobbit, by Tolkien”.  I was very impressed! and I will put entire quote at the end of this entry.

So we headed to the Tetons–Grand Teton National Park…and are they grand!

WOW!

As Kathy S. wrote–there are no bad views in Wyoming!

We hiked and biked and then we backpacked in to Cascade Canyon—fantastic!

We hiked up to Lake Solitude….

and it was worth it!

Then…. on to Yellowstone! and, of course, Old Faithful!

Old Faithful!

We spent the day exploring all of the geysers in the area. It is amazing. It smells like sulphur everywhere, but it felt great to inhale the vapor–warm and soothing.  These are the result of sinter deposits–silica. The thermophores–bacteria that adapted to living in high temperatures–make these fantastic colors!  John thinks they would make great screen savers….

On Saturday night in Mammoth Springs, the elk were mating in the town square! There was one bull elk and serveral cows (his harem). The rangers had the wonderful job of directing traffic and keeping the tourists (us!) away from the herd. The next morning we heard some kids commenting that church service was great except for the mating calls of that bull!

On Sunday, we went to see the Mammoth Terraces–almost other worldly–it looks cold, but remember these are hot! Made of travertine deposits–calcium carbonate. I hope that you are impressed with my new vocabulary

So we had lunch on the banks of the Yellowstone River and what did we see when we where leaving the parking lot?

You won’t believe this……

and then it was time to leave Wyoming (sigh!)…via the Northern entrance of Yellowstone…

And now we are in Bozeman, Montana. we stayed in a motel last night–it was cold and rainy–I know it’s still summer in the East!!! But this is a really nice college and outdoors town (Montana State University)–I couldn’t find local beer, so I had a Smithwick’s-always good! I’ve been sitting in their Co-op Cafe writing this entry… everybody here looks “vaguely familiar” as we say, eh, Peggy?

We’ll be heading North to Glacier National Park either later today or tomorrow.

Here is the rest of Tolkien’s quote:

All that is Gold Does Not Glitter is a poem written by J. R. R. Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings novel. It forms an integral part of the plot. The poem reads:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.[1]

Wyoming to Idaho…

We arrived in Idaho yesterday in time to have a soak at Heise Hot Springs….life is hard on the road! Then we drove to Idaho Falls– we are staying with Jim and Susan and their old cat and dog and new little kitty, Toby.

We walked to town –only minutes away—and had dinner at a bustling cafe. I’ve decide to sample local beers–of course, Bud in St. Louis —and last night we had Ob-1, an organic ale–very good!

After dinner, we walked around town–which is on the Snake River. Susan used to give tours to 4th graders–so she is very informed about town history! It is lovely. They have a man-made waterfall in the river which generates electricity for the town.

We hated to leave Wyoming so we plan to return to Jackson’s Hole on Sunday.  Here are some of the reason’s why we want to return to Wyoming:

Sagebrush and Pine trees

Lake Fremont

Of course, Idaho isn’t bad, either!
Amber waves of grain

more Idaho

Unbelievable sights everywhere!

How blessed we are to have good weather and good friends and family all along the way…Thanks to all of you!

To answer Carol’s questions about what we ate in Lander–Pizza! Tony’s Pizza was the only restaurant open after we finished at the library–and then we found out that the town laundramat had free Wi-Fi! It was closed at 10:00–but I could still log on —so picture us, in the van, in the parking lot using the free wi-fi!

To answer Carol’s question—Our menu has been very good–we had a cook-out on Thursday at our campsite–grilled veggies and veggie burgers and tofu dogs–with the buns left over from the forced eating at Lin and Rob’s (thanks, again!)  We’ve had fresh salads–we stopped at farmer’s market in Laramie. And eggs–scrambled, hard boiled and over easy!  Cheese and, of course, almonds for snacks.  What else could anyone need? If you have good ideas for easy meals, please post!

Sorry about the terrible cell phone connections–I’ll try to call you back while we are in town…..

Wyoming!!!

Well, we followed Terry’s advice and avoided Kansas–sorry,Kate, we didn’t read your note before taking off. We headed towards Iowa for about 2 minutes and then Nebraska! More corn and more flatness! But clean and really nice State Parks.

Now we are in Wyoming! WOW! Really spectacular! I won’t be able to send pictures because I am in the library in Lander, Wyoming–I couldn’t get my computer to connect to the internet so I am using a public computer—no internet cafes in town either –at least nobody knows of one! Nice people, though. Very friendly to out of towners–this is a climbing area and John is in Heaven! They are used to the climbers hanging around.

We went on a fabulous hike today –I need to get more words to describe the beauty–I kept saying “Wow!” We followed a roaring river, the Popo Agie, and kept going up higher and higher–to the waterfall. The skies were clear and it was about 70 degrees–can’t get much better!

IMG_2848

We have been really RVing — and doing quite well. So glad to have 17 feet to enclose us last night —it was windy, cold and raining when we arrived. We are near the Wind Rivers–now I know where they got the name!

IMG_2877

We will be heading to Yellowstone now and/or Idaho Falls to visit some of John’s old friends. Then, no family or friends until Portland–and Peggy! There is so much to see before that, it may take us a while, Peg. Don’t sell my clothes yet–it will be nice to have something different to wear in the city.

We are eating in town tonight–big treat!

I just added  some pictures–more later!

Show me the "show me" state!

We arrived in St. Louis on Sunday and met up with cousin Patrick. He gave us what he called his “quarter tour” of his beloved city–it was worth a lot more! (and great to see my cuz!)

Patrick and his lovely wife Terry allowed us to use their house as our base–wonderful!

We met up with Quinn, Lyn’s daughter, and went on another bike ride on the Katy Trail–very hot but pretty….

More later–heading further West today! Terry tells us that Kansas is very boring and we should drive it at night….nothing but cornfields!

We are in Indiana!

We are definitely in the mid-west—RV capital of the world! Now we are at niece Lin’s BB&B–Bed, Breakfast, and Biking! Rob (Lin’s husband) took us on an invigorating 16 mile bike ride through the cornfields this morning –Beautiful! Blue skies and cool temperatures–Lin says that it was hot all summer and just got cool for us!  Then,we came back and their son,Luke, had prepared blueberry pancakes…  Awesome!

Last night we had a mini-family reunion with Betsy, Jean, Christopher, and Hali.  Of course, Lin and Rob and their children Ben, Luke and Leigha.

The kids were playing a special kind of croquet that Rob made up—Kentucky Kroquet–where you throw the ball through the wicket—it really looked and sounded like fun!
